Description
The training will begin with a review of the high rates of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in people with serious mental illness (SMI), the clinical correlates of PTSD, and discussion of how PTSD interacts with and worsens the course of SMI. Methods for reliably screening and diagnosing PTSD in people with SMI will be described, as well as strategies for distinguishing between psychotic symptoms and PTSD symptoms. The remainder of the presentation will describe a 12-16 week standardized cognitive behavioral intervention for treating PTSD in people with SMI, the Cognitive Restructuring (CR) program, which has been shown to be effective in controlled studies. Research on the CR program will be briefly reviewed. Mueser, K. T., & Gottlieb, J. D. (2025).
