This event highlights the Equine Science Center’s work in advancing equine health, horse management practices, and solutions to equine industry issues.
The webinar will begin with a welcome by The Equine Science Center's Founding Director, Dr. Karyn Malinowski. This year's keynote, "Equine Welfare: A new World For Equine Athletes", will also be given by Dr. Malinowski. Dr. Malinowski has been a leader for two decades in providing research-based data in support of the importance of the racing segment of the New Jersey horse industry for both its economic impact and its role in preserving agricultural working landscape and open space. This data was used by the equine industry to convince the state of New Jersey to invest $20 million/year for up to five years, in 2019, in support of horse racing purse subsides. Her talk will focus on equine health and well being as affected by racing and sport to create a safer and level playing field.
Dr. Allen Page will provide a supplemental talk, "Can We Use A Blood Test To Predict Catastrophic Racing Injuries In Horses?", which will focus on the use of blood tests to examine and find markers of potential future injuries.
Finally the Center will present its annual awards, the "Spirit of the Horse" Award, and the "Gold Medal Horse Farm Award" to this year's recipients.
